Academia Sinca member to head NCTU

Taipei, Nov. 2 (CNA) National Chiao Tung University on Sunday selected its new president from among the ranks of Academia Sinica, Taiwan's top academic research institute.

Frank Chang, 63, is currently based at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he serves as the Wintek Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering, and chairman of the Electrical Engineering Department.

In a statement, NCTU said Chang's ideas for running a university include cultivating outstanding professors, pursuing truth and honor, molding the characters of students and seeking knowledge.

He was appointed president of NCTU from a short list of three candidates, pending approval by Taiwan's Ministry of Education.

Chang is an NCTU alumnus, having earned his doctoral degree in electrical engineering there.

He is also a member of Taiwan's Academia Sinica, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and the U.S.-based Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
