Taipei, Nov. 5 (CNA) One of the two reactors at Taiwan's third nuclear power plant in Pingtung County will be shut down next week for a 29-day overhaul, Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower, 台電) said Thursday.

The overhaul will take place between Nov. 9 and Dec. 7 to replace fuel rods and maintain related electrical equipment of the No. 2 reactor at the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant, according to the state-owned power company.

The overhaul will also expand the direct current battery capacity for supplying power to safety equipment from eight hours to 24 hours, Taipower said.

The company stressed that it will be normal to see non-radioactive steam discharged from the nuclear power plant when the No. 2 reactor is shut down and resumed.

The third nuclear power plant has two reactors, which require an overhaul for every one and half years of operation. The No. 1 reactor at the plant completed an overhaul in April this year.
