Taipei, Feb. 12 (CNA) Kao Koong-lian (高孔廉), former vice chairman of the semi-official Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), has been named director of the ruling Kuomintang's (KMT's) Mainland Affairs Department, the party announced Wednesday.

Kao will serve concurrently as a special adviser to KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) and a board member of the KMT's think tank, the National Policy Foundation, the party said, adding that he will assume his new positions after the six-day Lunar New Year holiday beginning Feb. 18.

Kao, who is currently in the United States, said through the SEF Thursday that the KMT has the ability to deal with cross-Taiwan Strait relations properly and has managed to pull cross-strait ties back on track through efforts over the past several years.

He said the party will continue to deal with cross-strait ties pragmatically in the hope of winning the support of the public.

Kao was deputy chief of the ministerial-level Mainland Affairs Council from 1991 to 1997.
