Taipei, Jan. 3 (CNA) The Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) saidMonday that its annual ridership for 2010 reached a record-high 36.9million passengers, a 14.19 percent increase over the previous year.
The company also recorded a daily average of 101,000 rides lastyear amid a steady growth in ridership since the THSR startedoperations in 2007, said Christina Tao, THSR media relations manager.
The figures indicate a big jump in performance compared to 2009,when the daily ridership averaged 88,000, said Tao, adding that theycould be attributed to successful alliances between the THSR andlocal travel agencies.
She said special travel packages offering round-trip tickets, passes to the Taipei International Flora Expo and accommodation havedrawn attention from both domestic and foreign travelers.
"Our clients have apparently been taking advantage of ourservices, " Tao said, adding that the high speed railway means thatpeople can now travel to virtually any point in Taiwan in a singleday.
According to the company, the THSR hopes to increase the average daily ridership to 105,000 in 2011.
