Mass bike ride held in Taichung to mark World Carfree Day

Taipei, Sept. 22 (CNA) The Taichung city government sponsored acycling event Wednesday as part of the celebration of World CarfreeDay to reclaim the streets from the automobile and promote thecentral city as being eco-friendly.

A total of 3,000 cyclists rode the 10-km route that started atthe city's Chaoma soccer stadium and ended at a brewery in TaichungCounty's Wujih Township.

The event was also a symbol of the merger of the city and countyinto a special municipality that will take place Dec. 25, saidTaichung Mayor Jason Hu.

The city government will provide a diverse cycling network thatwill help citizens improve their health and allow them to explore thebeauty of Taichung, he added.

Taichung County Deputy Magistrate Chang Chuang-hsi expanded onHu's remarks, saying that a bike path network combining threeexisting paths in the county and 10 in the city will be formed afterthe formation of the special municipality.

The day's events also featured kite-flying and a Mid-AutumnFestival celebration that took place in the Wenhsin Forest Parklater that same day.
