Top-ranked Taiwan-Czech tennis duo through to semifinals in Rome

Taipei, Sept. 19 (CNA) Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) of Taiwan and Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic advanced Friday to the women's doubles semifinals at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia tennis tournament in Rome, scoring their second straight win.

Hsieh and Strycova, the top seeded women's pair at the tournament, defeated the sixth seeds Veronika Kudermetova of Russia and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic 7-5(5), 6-4 in a quarterfinal match that lasted one hour and 39 minutes.

Early in the match, Hsieh and Strycova were trailing 2-4, but they staged a comeback to clinch the first set and went on the win the second one, securing a place in the semifinals.

The Taiwan-Czech pair, ranked world No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, won their match a day earlier against Japanese Makoto Ninomiya and Nao Hibino 6-0, 6-0 in 49 minutes.

In the semifinals, Hsieh and Strycova are scheduled to face off Saturday against non-seeded Hayley Carter of the United States and Louisa Stefani of Brazil.
