Singapore, April 12 (CNA) Taiwanese badminton elites Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) and Chou Tien-chen (周天成) both managed to stave off their staunch opponents on Friday to secure a slot in the semifinals at the 2019 Singapore Open.

In the women's singles event, world No. 1 Tai opened the game with a 10-0 start against Sung Ji Hyun of South Korea and proceeded with an easy win, 21-11.

However, Tai found herself in trouble in the second game when drifts affected her play and cost her the game, 17-21.

The 24-year old who won the women's singles at the 2019 Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur last week regained her composure with an 11-3 early lead and eventually secured the third game, 21-16.

Admitting in an interview with CNA that she had committed a lot of errors in the match, Tai still gave herself a passing score and vowed to do her best in the next game.

She will compete against Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, 4th in the world ranking, on Saturday. She has played against Yamaguchi 15 times and won nine of the matches, the most recent one in Kuala Lumpur last week.

Meanwhile, Chou defeated India's Sameer Verma 21-10, 15-21 and 21-15 in the men's singles on Friday.

Chou, last year' men's singles champion, next faces Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia. The two shuttlers have played each other eight times in the past with four wins apiece.

The 2019 Singapore Open, which takes place from April 9-14 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, is a World Tour Super 500 event under the Badminton World Federation (BWF), with a total prize money of US$355,000.
