Seoul, June 14 (CNA) South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Saturday it will launch an investigation into a China Airlines (CAL) flight that failed to follow air traffic control instructions and landed on the wrong runway at Busan's Gimhae International Airport, classifying the case as a "quasi accident."
Although Thursday's incident involving flight CI186 from Taoyuan caused no damage or injuries, it meets the criteria for a serious incident under aviation safety regulations, the ministry told CNA. The Korea Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board will undertake a probe into the incident.
The incident was first brought to public attention by Taiwanese aerospace YouTuber and former pilot James Wang (王天傑), who revealed during a livestream that the CAL aircraft had landed on the incorrect runway.
Taiwan's Transportation Safety Board said earlier it will support the Korean investigation if requested and is prepared to take over should the Korean authorities opt not to proceed with their own probe.
CAL also confirmed the error, saying that the flight did not follow air traffic control instructions upon arrival in Busan. The airline has launched an internal investigation.
In response to South Korea's move, the company said it has no further updates at the moment.
