Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Authorities in Taipei reminded pet owners to close their doors and windows on Tuesday, as New Year's Eve fireworks could frighten dogs and cats, causing them to run outside.
"With 2025 approaching, many places are planning fireworks displays for New Year's Eve," the Taipei City Animal Protection Office said in a press release.
"The Taipei City Animal Protection Office reminds pet owners to ensure their doors and windows are properly secured to prevent cats and dogs from running out due to the loud noise from fireworks and firecrackers."
Fireworks are popular in Taiwan, and New Year's Eve displays drawing thousands of spectators are held every year in cities across the country.
The Taipei City Animal Protection Office warned that owners could be fined between NT$3,000 and NT$15,000 (US$91 and US$457) under the Animal Protection Act if their pets are found roaming outside.
It also reminded Taipei residents that if they come across a lost pet, they should call the city's animal rescue hotline by dialing 1959.
In its statement, the office recounted the tale of a lost kitty who was discovered hiding in a drain in Taipei's Wenshan District on Dec. 24.
The gray British Shorthair came to the attention of the authorities after a concerned citizen reported the cat's cries.
Fortunately, the cat was microchipped and registered, enabling the animal protection office to reunite the lost feline with its owner.
