Firefighter dies, over 10 trapped, 82 taken to hospital in Pingtung fire
Taipei, Sept. 22 (CNA) A fire in a plant in Pingtung Technology Industrial Park claimed the life of a firefighter and as of 9 p.m. Friday evening, had resulted in at least 82 people being taken to hospital, while over ten people remained unaccounted for, according to local authorities.
The fire started at around 5 p.m. in the factory of a golf equipment company in Pingtung County.
The county's Bureau of Fire and Emergency Services confirmed that it remains unclear how the fire started, adding that although one fatality has been confirmed among firefighters who entered the building, the whereabouts of four of six other firefighters in the factory remains unclear.
Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi (周春米) added that around eight to nine people apparently remain trapped at the scene with the four missing firefighters.
As of 9 p.m., 82 people had been taken to six medical facilities across Pingtung County and Kaohsiung City.
Kaohsiung City has also dispatched emergency response vehicles and personnel to help extinguish the ongoing blaze.
