CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 39,628 new COVID-19 cases, 40 deaths
Taipei, Sept. 17 (CNA) Taiwan reported 39,628 new cases of COVID-19 and 40 deaths from the disease on Saturday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All but two suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 17 had not received any dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, the CECC said.
Severe, moderate COVID-19 cases
Also on Saturday, the CECC reported 49 cases that were newly classified as severe and 126 cases as moderate.
Of the 5,844,972 domestically-transmitted cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 11,250 have been classified as severe infections, and 14,643 as moderate, accounting for 0.19 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Sept. 16.
Regionally, New Taipei City reported the highest number of new cases on Saturday, with 8,583, followed by Taichung with 5,019 and Taipei with 4,603.
Taoyuan had 4,360 new cases, Kaohsiung 3,131, Tainan 2,284, Changhua County 1,776, Hsinchu County 1,084, Pingtung County 1,038, Yilan 1,026, Hsinchu City 958, Yunlin 871, Miaoli County 866, Keelung 788, Nantou County 754 and Hualien County 712.
Chiayi County had 566 cases, Chiayi City 362, Taitung County 327, Kinmen 138, Penghu 131, and the Matsu Islands 17, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 5,930,927 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, a vast majority of which were domestically transmitted, with 31,959 classified as imported because they had originated overseas.
With the 40 deaths reported Saturday, the total number of COVID-19 fatalities recorded in the country rose to 10,509.
