CORONAVIRUS/COVID situation stable as Taiwan reports 170 new cases, 18 deaths: CECC
Taipei, June 16 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday recorded 170 new COVID-19 cases and 18 deaths, marking the fourth straight day with fewer than 200 cases, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
Although the total number of cases on Wednesday was slightly higher than the 135 COVID-19 cases reported Tuesday, the current COVID-19 situation in Taiwan is stable, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said at a CECC press briefing.
Of the 170 new cases, 167 were domestic infections, with New Taipei reporting 65 cases, the highest number, followed by Taipei with 50, and Miaoli County with 21, according to the CECC.
Chen said more cases are expected to be confirmed in Miaoli in the next few days, as the CECC is carrying out a second round of testing at tech companies that had cluster infections earlier this month. (Another 21 migrant workers in Taiwan's Miaoli contract COVID-19)
On Wednesday, all but one of the cases in Miaoli were among tech firm employees, who had earlier tested negative for COVID-19 and have been in quarantine for the past two weeks, he said.
In other parts of the country, Taoyuan reported 14 cases, Hualien County eight, Hsinchu County five, and Keelung two, while one each was recorded in Kaohsiung and Taichung. (13 infected with COVID in Hualien family; new cases in Taoyuan clusters)
Four of the domestic cases reported Wednesday had unknown sources of infection, the CECC said.
The three imported cases, meanwhile, involved two Philippine nationals who came to work in Taiwan, and a Taiwanese national who recently returned from the Philippines.
The 18 fatalities were nine men and nine women, aged 30-100, who passed away between June 6 and June 14, according to the CECC.
To date, Taiwan has confirmed a total of 13,409 COVID-19 cases, over 12,000 of which are domestic infections reported since May 15, when the country first recorded more than 100 cases in a single day.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths in the country has risen to 478, including 466 recorded since May 15, CECC data shows.
