CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan takes Japan off COVID-19 'medium' risk list
Taipei, Aug. 5 (CNA) The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) has removed Japan from the list of countries classified as low or medium-risk for COVID-19 whose nationals are eligible for shortened quarantine periods in Taiwan.
The move to remove Japan from the list of medium-risk countries on Wednesday means travelers to Taiwan from Japan will not be able to shorten their mandatory 14-day quarantine period to seven days.
Japan was removed from the list because the number of cases it has been reporting per day in the last two weeks has surged, according to the CECC. Over the past week, Japan has had more than 1,000 new cases per day, bringing the total number to 41,455.
The CECC's latest list of medium-risk countries consists of South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. Travelers from these countries only have to be quarantined in Taiwan for seven days after arrival.
The list of low-risk countries consists of New Zealand, Macao, Palau, Fiji, Brunei, Vietnam, Thailand, Mongolia, Bhutan, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. Travelers from these countries and regions can shorten their 14-day quarantine to five days.
Globally, COVID-19 has infected over 18,516,907 people in 187 countries and regions, with a total of 700,477 fatalities, according to CECC statistics as of Wednesday.
