Taipei, Nov. 8 (CNA) Greater Taipei's airport express metro line which links Taipei Main Station to Taiwan's largest airport in Taoyuan City has served over 63 million passengers since the start of its service in 2017, Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan (鄭文燦) said Friday.

Since the launch of its commercial service on March 2, 2017, the number of passengers using the 51.03-kilometer line that connects the municipalities of Taipei, New Taipei, and Taoyuan has been growing constantly, Cheng said while attending an event at the line's A8 station near Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou, New Taipei.

According to Cheng, the average daily ridership reached 74,000 during the first 10 months of this year -- up 20.9 percent year on year.

Two types of services are available -- commuter trains and express trains. Express trains run from Taipei directly to the Taoyuan airport in 38 minutes. Even the commuter service that stops at all 21 stations on the line takes only 50 minutes.

Ascribing the increase in passenger numbers to the many discount measures put forth since last year, Cheng said the Taoyuan Airport line is seeking to strike a balance in revenue and costs by luring more commuters and passengers.

Currently, some 20,000-30,000 passengers and commuters use the Taoyuan Airport MRT Station every day to travel on the line, largely reducing the traffic burden on nearby national freeways, Cheng said.
