Taipei, Aug. 24 (CNA) The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) said it has busted a cross-border fraud ring run by Taiwanese nationals in a joint operation carried out with authorities in Portugal.

Su Li-tsung (蘇立琮), an officer with the CIB's International Criminal Affairs Division, said Friday that Portuguese police arrested 19 Taiwanese on May 14 who were allegedly running a scam operation in the Portuguese town of Cascais outside of Lisbon.

The alleged telecom fraudsters allegedly posed as police officers to scam their victims in China by tricking them into transferring money into designated accounts, according to the CIB.

During the raid, police also seized eight laptop computers, nine iPads, 23 mobile phones, and documents listing the bank transfers received from their victims, the bureau said.

The 19 people have since been repatriated to Taiwan for questioning.

With information obtained from the fraudsters, Su said local authorities managed to track down their ringleaders based in Taiwan, and two people were subsequently arrested in Jhubei, Hsinchu County, on Monday, he said.

The case has now been handed over to the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office for further investigation.
