Typhoon Matmo expected to make landfall around midnight Tuesday

Update: Typhoon Matmo makes landfall in Changbin Township, Taitung County at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday: CWB

Taipei, July 22 (CNA) Typhoon Matmo is expectd to make landfall on southeastern Taiwan at around midnight Tuesday, with winds gusting up to 183 kph and torrential rain, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said late Tuesday.

The year's first typhoon to affect Taiwan was approaching the island from 130 km south of Hualien City as of 10 p.m., heading in a north-northwesterly direction, according to the CWB.

The eye of the typhoon could pass the island at 8 a.m. Wednesday as the storm moves toward China's Fujian Province, added the CWB, noting that heavy rain in central and southern Taiwan could last through July 25.

It estimated that sea and land warnings for the typhoon could be lifted early Thursday.
