School, office closures announced around Taiwan ahead of typhoon

Taipei, July 22 (CNA) Most residents of Taiwan proper will have the day off work and school Wednesday as Typhoon Matmo draws closer to northeast Taiwan.

As of 8:15 p.m., closures had been announced for schools and offices in Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, Taoyuan, and Hsinchu city and county in the north; Miaoli in central Taiwan; and Kaohsiung and Pingtung in the south, according to the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration.

The eastern counties of Yilan, Hualien and Taitung said earlier Tuesday that school and work would be suspended Wednesday. Schools and offices in these three counties were closed from 6 p.m. Tuesday.

In Taiwan, only Taichung, Changhua, Nantou and Yunlin in central Taiwan and Chiayi and Tainan in the south had not yet made their announcements.

The outlying islands of Penghu, Kinmen, and Lienchiang (Matsu) had also not made announcements.
