Taoyuan, July 10 (CNA) Taiwan's Army conducted a drill Thursday that simulated a response to potential Chinese operations aimed at seizing control of Taoyuan International Airport.
The Army's 269th Mechanized Infantry Brigade was mobilized for the drill to protect Taiwan's primary international gateway in Taoyuan's Dayuan District, which was part of the ongoing Han Kuang military exercises that end on July 18.
The Ministry of National Defense said the exercise was aimed at simulating a response against a Chinese airborne or helicopter assault on the airport.
Three CM11 tanks and three CM22 mortar carriers were deployed near a temple in the district for the drill. Troops simulated firing mortars from the CM22 vehicles, whose range covered the airport and the shore of Dayuan.
The CM11 tank crews practiced engagement procedures and maintained vigilance, with their turrets regularly scanning for possible enemy threats.
Including command and logistical vehicles directly supporting the CM11 and CM22 vehicles on the battle line, the size of forces deployed along the battle line was roughly equivalent to two platoons.
Other vehicles supporting the deployments nearby included M978 heavy fuel tankers, light and medium tactical vehicles, and Humvees, ensuring robust logistical support.

During the drill, some soldiers also operated Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) devices that resembled smartphones. The ATAK system helps to establish a common operational picture that enables shared battlefield awareness and real-time updates on enemy movements and friendly unit locations.
Military personnel with knowledge of the matter said the drill placed emphasis on familiarizing troops with the local environment and improving coordination and engagement protocols between platoons once in tactical positions.
