Taipei, Aug. 7 (CNA) World famous Spanish tenor José Carreras will perform at the Pingtung Performing Arts Center Oct. 27, accompanied by a local choir and a soprano, the county's CulturalAffairs Department announced Wednesday.
Carreras, who drew hundreds of millions of fans around the world as one of the Three Tenors along with Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti in a series of mass concerts held from 1990 to 2003, will perform with the choir of Taiwu Elementary School and soprano Huang Li-chin (黃莉錦), said department head Wu Ming-jung (吳明榮) at a news conference.
Carreras' performance is one of the cultural programs to be presented by the county government in the second half of the year as part of its efforts to promote music in the southern Taiwan county.
According to Wu, Carreras accepted the invitation to visitPingtung County this year, which marks the 10th anniversary of Typhoon Morakot, because he was touched by the courage of local people as they rebuilt their lives following the tragedy, which resulted in more than 700 deaths.
Highly impressed by the traditional tribal songs sung bythe school's choir, Carreras agreed to share the stage withthem and Huang as a tribute to the typhoon victims, he said.
While in the county, Carreras will also visit the Ulaljucpermanent settlement in Wanluan Township, which was rebuilt by the Paiwan tribe after being destroyed by Typhoon Morakot, Wu said.
