October smartphone sales in Taiwan boosted by new iPhone 11 series
Taipei, Nov. 22 (CNA) Smartphone sales in Taiwan rose more than 10 percent in October from the previous month, mainly on the launch of Apple Inc.'s new iPhone 11 series, industry statistics showed Friday.
According to the data, smartphone sales increased by a monthly 10.5 percent to 672,000 units in October, the highest for the year, following the global release of the latest iPhones on Sept. 20.
Apple remained the top seller in Taiwan, with a 37.5 percent share of the market in October, driven by sales of its high-end iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max and the cheaper iPhone 11, the data showed.
According to market analysts, Apple saw strong sales because of its hardware upgrades on its iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max and its pricing strategy for the iPhone 11, which is about NT$2,000 (US$65.57) cheaper than its predecessor. The iPhone XR, which was unveiled in September 2018, also continued to attract buying in Taiwan, analysts said.
Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea saw the second strongest sales in Taiwan in October, taking a 19.4 percent share of the market, followed by China's OPPO (10.6 percent), Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. (5.3 percent), China's Huawei Technologies Co. (4.3 percent), and Taiwan's HTC Corp. (4.1 percent), the statistics indicated. In terms of sales value, the statistics showed Apple also topping the list in Taiwan, with a 68.6 percent share in October.
Samsung was second with a 12.9 percent share, ahead of OPPO (4.3 percent) and Japan's Sony Corp. (4 percent), which benefited from sales of its pricey flagship Xperia 5. Asustek, in fifth spot, took a 2.6 percent share, followed by Asustek (2.6 percent) and Huawei (1.8 percent).
In terms of individual models, Apple's iPhone 11 128GB was out front for the second consecutive month, followed by the iPhone 11 Pro Max 256GB, the iPhone 11 64GB, Samsung's Galaxy A50, Galaxy A20, OPPO's AX5s, the Galaxy A70, the iPhone 11 Pro 256GB, the Galaxy Note 10+ 256GB, and OPPO's Reno Z 128GB, the statistics showed.
