Taipei, March 6 (CNA) The market penetration rate of the LED-backlit display technology is expected to surpass 90 percent on the back of lower asking prices, according to a market information advisory institute Wednesday.

The average asking price for LED-backlit panel has dropped 4-8 percent in the first quarter of 2013, while the prices of television using such technology have also fallen 3-9 percent, LEDinside said in a recent statement.

The technology's market penetration rate is expected to reach 92 percent in 2013, up from 70 percent in the previous year. Applications of such technology on televisions are also expected to reach 90 percent, up from 70 percent in 2012.

LEDinside noted that there are price differences between the side-lighting mode and the bottom-lighting mode of the LED-backlit display technology.

The cost of side-lighting mode is 1.5 times that of the bottom-lighting mode as the manufacturing process of the former is more complicated and calls for more expensive parts and components, it said.

More than 70 percent of the TV products of South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Corp. use the cheaper bottom-lighting mode, while Taiwan's AU Optronics and Innolux Corp. use the more expensive side-lighting mode, it added.

The six major television vendors in China, meanwhile, have 40 percent of their TV products using the side-lighting mode and 60 percent using the bottom-lighting mode.
