2012/08/12 14:22:08

Taipei, Aug. 12 (CNA) A lightning strike may have damaged a runway at Taipei International Airport (Songshan Airport) on Saturday, airport authorities said, adding that the damage has since been repaired and flight departures and take-offs have resumed.

The airport's staff discovered a hole on the No. 10 runway, which was estimated to be 70 centimeters long and 50 cm wide, around 6 p.m., the airport said in a statement.

Those departures and take-offs scheduled to use the runway were suspended after the damage was discovered, according to the statement.

The runway was repaired around 8 p.m. of that day and flight departures and take-offs were resumed shortly after, the airport added.

The damage was estimated to have delayed five international and 20 domestic flights at the airport during the nearly two hours, the statement said.

The Civil Aeronautics Administration noted that lightning striking a runway is a rare occurrence.
