Taipei, March 20 (CNA) The Cabinet has approved a change of name for the semi-official agency that handles relations with Japan to the Association of Taiwan-Japan Relations, Cabinet spokesman Hsu Kuo-yung (徐國勇) said Monday.

The name change was proposed after Japan changed the name of its representative office in Taiwan from the Interchange Association, Japan to the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association on Jan. 1.

The Cabinet approved the addition of Taiwan to the original name of the office -- the Association of East Asian Relations.

Meanwhile, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) thanked the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for its positive and cooperative attitude toward Taiwan.

"Our government will display the same positive and cooperative attitude," Tsai told a visiting Japanese delegation led by Keisuke Suzuki, director of the Liberal Democratic Party's Youth Division in Japan.
