APEC telecommunications meeting to begin in Taiwan Sunday

Taipei, Sept. 26 (CNA) A meeting of telecommunications experts, officials and industry representatives from the member states of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) grouping will open in Taipei on Sunday.

The 58th APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group Meeting (APEC TEL 58) will discuss how to enhance cybersecurity, improve connectivity with robust infrastructure, and promote sustainable and inclusive growth through information and communication technologies (ICT), according to Chan Ting-i (詹婷怡), chairperson of the Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC).

The approximately 250 participating officials, information communication technology experts and industry representatives from 19 APEC member economies will also join round table meetings on the themes of "smart cities," "best practices for enhancing citizens' digital literacy" and "best practices for promoting universal broadband service," Chan said in a welcome message on the APEC TEL 58 website.

It is the fourth time that Taiwan is hosting the meeting, which will be held over six days, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, at Taipei International Convention Center, the NCC said.

The aims of the APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group and its 21 member economies are to advance the development of ICT infrastructure and services, while promoting cooperation, sharing of information and development of effective policies and regulations in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the APEC website.

The member economies are Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.
