Taipei, April 26 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan closed down 0.68 percent Thursday, falling below the 10,500-point mark, led by drops in wind energy, biotechnology and electronics stocks.

The Taiwan Stock Exchange's main index closed down 71.39 points, or 0.68 percent, at 10,488.58, after moving between 10,478.98 and 10,618.68. Turnover totaled NT$140.27 billion (US$4.72 billion).

The market opened up 23.11 points at 10,583.08 and surged above the 12-month moving average of 10,589 points and even the 10,600-point mark before yielding much of the gains later in the session, mainly because of weakness in shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the most heavily weighted stock in Taiwan.

The company, a key supplier of chips for iPhones made by Apple Inc., lost 1.33 percent to end at NT$222.00.

Other falling electronics stocks included integrated circuit designer MediaTek Inc., which lost 4.01 percent to close at NT$323.50.

As a whole, electronics shares fell 1.01 percent, while the biotechnology and glass sectors also performed weakly, shedding 2.96 percent and 3.01 percent, respectively.

Losers outnumbered gainers 683 to 158, with 75 stocks remaining unchanged.
