Taipei, Oct. 12 (CNA) A Taiwanese delegation will depart on Monday to participate in the Asian Para Games scheduled to be held from Oct. 18 to Oct. 24 in Incheon, South Korea.

Some 73 Taiwanese athletes are part of the delegation that will compete in 12 sports, including athletics, table tennis, swimming, shooting, archery, powerlifting, badminton, ten-pin bowling, judo, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis and wheelchair dance sports.

Vice President Wu Den-yih presented a flag to the delegation on Sunday, encouraging all the member athletes to perform well during the games and win honors for the country.

Taiwan bagged eight gold medals, seven silvers and 11 bronzes at the 2010 Asian Para Games held in Guangzhou, China, and was ranked eighth in the overall medals tally among the 41 countries and regions participating in the games.

The 2014 Incheon Asian Para Games are significant in many ways for athletes and contingents as they will provide them with the opportunity to compete at the highest level, as well as collect valuable points on merit to qualify for the 2016 Paralympic Games that will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, according to the organizer.

A total of 23 sports have been listed for the games, four more than the Guangzhou 2010 games, which featured 19 sports. The four new sports added to the games' roster are lawn bowls, sailing, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair dance sports.
