Taiwan watching China's military build-up in South China Sea: MND

2016/02/17 13:56:04

Taipei, Feb. 17 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense (MND) has been keeping abreast of the latest developments in relation to reports that the Chinese military has deployed an advanced surface-to-air missile system to Woody Island (永興島), part of the Paracel Island chain in the South China Sea, a spokesman for the ministry said Wednesday.

U.S. media cited new satellite images from last week that appear to show two batteries of eight surface-to-air missile launchers, as well as a radar system, on Woody Island, one of the contested islands in the South China Sea.

The Pentagon has confirmed the imagery of the build-up of missiles on the island obtained from Imagesat International as authentic.

MND spokesman Luo Shou-he (羅紹和) said that Taiwan's military has gathered information about the deployment and is closely watching further developments.

In response to the Chinese military's latest move, Luo also said that all parties concerned in the South China Sea dispute should work together for peace and stability in the region and avoid any unilateral action that could accelerate tension there.

Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims on Woody Island in the Paracel Island chain, the same group of islands that a U.S. Navy destroyer approached a few weeks ago.
