Taipei, March 30 (CNA) An event jointly hosted by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture (MOC) and the British Film Institute (BFI) will spotlight 15 movies that characterize the Taiwan New Cinema movement throughout April.

"Myriad Voices: Reframing Taiwan New Cinema" will take place at the BFI Southbank in London from March 31 to April 30. It will feature 15 films across 30 screenings, showcasing works by renowned directors such as Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢), Edward Yang (楊德昌), Wang Toon (王童), Wan Jen (萬仁), Chang Yi (張毅), Chen Kun-hou (陳坤厚), and Huang Yu-shan (黃玉珊), according to a statement released by the MOC this week.

In addition, Chen and Huang will attend select screenings to share their insights on Taiwan New Cinema, according to the statement.

The event follows on from the success of a season at BFI featuring works by Yang in February, the MOC quoted curator Hyun Jin Cho as saying.

According to Cho, the Taiwan New Cinema movement was grounded in a collective spirit of creativity, playfulness, and humility. This season hopes to paint a fuller picture of the vibrant film movement and shift the spotlight toward lesser-known but vital contributors, whose work helped shape this new cinematic expression.

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K. said this collaboration with BFI marks a significant milestone and reflects their commitment to fostering cultural exchange by enhancing appreciation of Taiwanese cinema.

In a statement, the MOC noted that the event was made possible with support from the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, which licensed the titles and participated in the curation work.

The MOC expressed hope that the distinctive narratives characterizing the films will strike a resonant chord with audiences in the U.K.

In its statement, the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K. said it hopes that the collaboration with the BFI, a major institute, will raise the profile of Taiwanese films in the U.K. and allow British people to gain a better understanding of Taiwanese cinema.
