Taipei, May 22 (CNA) The jobless rate for April fell slightly from a month earlier to 3.67 percent, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said Wednesday.

After seasonal adjustments, however, the local unemployment rate for April rose 0.01 percent from a month earlier to 3.73 percent, marking the second consecutive month of a higher seasonally adjusted jobless rate.

Pan Ning-hsin (潘寧馨), deputy director of the DGBAS census department, said that the higher seasonally adjusted unemployment rate over the past two months reflected an economic slowdown.

Pan said, however, that the increase remained tolerable.

In mid-February, the DGBAS revised its growth forecast for Taiwan's 2019 gross domestic product from 2.41 percent to 2.27 percent, citing weakening global demand. The DGBAS is expected to update its forecast later this month.

In April, the number of people out of work fell by 1,000, or 0.22 percent from a month earlier to 437,000, while the number of employed rose 2,000, or 0.02 percent, from a month earlier, to 11.48 million, according to the DGBAS data.

The labor participation rate for April stood at 59.06 percent, unchanged from a month earlier, the DGBAS said.

The DGBAS said the number of the first-time jobseekers fell by 1,000 from a month earlier in April, while the number of those who quit or who lost their jobs due to termination of seasonal or temporary job contracts also fell by about 2,000.

Among people with a university degree, the jobless rate in April hit 5.02 percent, the highest among all education groups, while the jobless rate among people holding a senior high school diploma and those with a graduate school degree stood at 3.52 percent and 2.73 percent, respectively, the DGBAS said.

The DGBAS said the jobless rate among people aged 20-24 was 11.70 percent in April, and in the 25-29 age group it was 6.46 percent.

The jobless rate for the first four months of this year stood at 3.68 percent, up 0.02 percentage points from a year earlier, while the labor participation rate rose 0.19 percentage points to 59.07 percent, the DGBAS added.
