Dry, cool weather forecast for Tuesday; could get warmer Wednesday

Taipei, Dec. 18 (CNA) Dry and cool weather is expected to continue in Taiwan on Tuesday under the influence of a continental air mass, and day-night temperature differences are expected to remain wide, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

With the strength of the continental air mass expected to gradually fade, however, the CWB forecast temperatures around Taiwan to rise slightly Wednesday and continue to move higher day by day until Saturday.

The bureau said temperatures are expected to hit 21-24 degrees in northern Taiwan and 26-28 degrees in central and southern Taiwan during the day Tuesday but will fall to 12-13 degrees in the north and 13-15 degrees in the south at night.

The lowest temperature in low-lying parts of Taiwan was 10 degrees in the Tamsui monitoring station in New Taipei early Tuesday morning, the lowest so far in the current winter season.

Because the air mass affecting Taiwan contains little moisture, the weather is expected to remain dry all day Tuesday, the CWB said.

On Wednesday, daytime temperatures are forecast to rise to 22-25 degrees in northern Taiwan and to 27-29 degrees in central and southern Taiwan, while the mercury at night will fall to 13-14 degrees in the north and 14-16 degrees in central and southern Taiwan, the CWB said.

Temperatures are expected to continue to rise until Saturday, the CWB forecast. It said a new weather system that is expected to set in Sunday will cool the weather again by bringing rain to Taiwan.

Meanwhile, the air quality in northern Taiwan, Yilan, Hualien and Taitung, is expected to be good to fair on Tuesday, according to the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA).

However, due to the lack of wind to disperse atmospheric pollutants, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was flashing an "orange alert" in some parts of central Taiwan, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung, indicating unhealthy levels of pollutants for sensitive groups, according to the EPA.
