Yangmingshan Flower Festival opens

2015/02/07 18:21:57

Taipei, Feb. 7 (CNA) The 2015 Yangmingshan Flower Festival opened in Taipei on Saturday and paid homage to those who died in the crash of a TransAsia Airways turboprop plane on Feb. 4.

The festival is being held at the Yangming Park and the Floriculture Experiment Center on Yangmingshan until March 15.

To mourn the victims of the TransAsia plane crash, in which 39 of those on board have been confirmed dead and four remain unaccounted for, a bell tolling was held as part of the opening ceremony.

According to the Parks and Street Light Office under Taipei's Public Works Department, the ample sunlight and limited rainfall on Yangmingshan so far this year has meant a smaller loss of flowers, or "blossom drop," this season.

The main highlights of the festival are cherry blossoms, Japanese camellia and rhododendrons, the office said.

Traffic controls will be imposed on Yangde Boulevard, the main road leading up to Yangmingshan, on weekends during the festival, and the office advised people heading to the flower festival to use public transportation.
