Taipei, June 19 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau issued land warnings for the outlying counties of Penghu and Kinmen Tuesday evening, warning residents to be on high alert as Tropical Storm Talim headed north.
If the storm keeps its current path and speed, the bureau said, a land warning for Taiwan proper could be issued by midnight at the earliest.
As of 5:30 p.m., Talim was centered 560 km southwest of Penghu, moving at a speed of 19 km per hour in a northeasterly direction.
The fifth storm to form this season, Talim was packing maximum sustained winds of 83 kph, with gusts reaching 108 kph.
The bureau said that central and southern Taiwan could experience torrential rain from the following day, while mountainous areas in those regions could post daily precipitation of over 350 mm until Friday.
It added that areas north of Taichung are not likely to be heavily affected until June 21.
