Taipei, Oct. 31 (CNA) Opposition Kuomintang (KMT) lawmaker Chiang Chi-chen (江啟臣) announced Tuesday that he will seek his party's nomination next year as the candidate for mayor of Taichung.

Chiang, who represents Taichung's Fengyuan District, is the second KMT lawmaker to make a bid for the city's mayoral election, after Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) made a similar announcement last week.

In announcing his bid, Chiang said his main goal is to create "a blessed new Taichung" for its citizens.

In response to Chang's announcement, KMT Organizational Development Committee Director Lee Che-hua (李哲華) said the two KMT hopefuls will either have to decide between themselves who should stand as the candidate or allow party members to vote on the issue.

Chiang, 45, was director of the now defunct Government Information Office from 2010 to 2011. He resigned the post to run for a legislative seat and has been serving as a lawmaker since 2012.

Lu, 56, is a six-term lawmaker who was first elected in 1999.

The candidate named by the KMT will be competing in late 2018 against incumbent Taichung Mayor Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, who was elected in 2014.
