Taipei, Oct. 8 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) bestowed visiting Paraguayan Vice President Juan Eudes Afara Maciel on Thursday with the Order of the Brilliant Star with Special Grand Cordon in recognition of his efforts and contribution to the promotion of bilateral ties between Taiwan and Paraguay.

After receiving the medal, Afara said that it was not only a great personal honor for him but also symbolized a continued enhancement of the cooperation and friendship between the two nations over the past 58 years after they first established diplomatic ties in 1957.

On Thursday evening, Vice President Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) hosted a dinner party at the Presidential Office in honor of his Paraguayan counterpart, in which Afara conferred Wu with Paraguay's National Order of Merit in the Grade of Grand Cross Extraordinary.

At the head of a nine-member delegation of Paraguay, Afara arrived in Taiwan Oct. 7 to participate in the Double Ten National Day celebrations in Taipei.

Before concluding his visit on Oct. 11, Afara will also call on other ranking government officials and visit economic and cultural facilities in the country.
