President denounces North Korea's actions

Taipei, Dec. 16 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou again condemnedNorth Korea Thursday for the Nov. 23 artillery attacks on a SouthKorean island, which has caused an escalation of regional tensionsover the past three weeks.

Ma expressed hope that stability and prosperity will be restoredsoon in Northeast Asia.

The president raised the issue while receiving Eustace John,deputy governor-general of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

According to Ma, as a Northeast Asian country, Taiwan has anobligation to promote regional peace.

Describing the Republic of China (Taiwan) as a country that wantsfreedom, democracy and peace, he said the government has been workingto improve cross-Taiwan Strait relations over the past two yearsbecause it is well aware that prosperity and freedom can only beachieved if there is peace.

Taiwan and China have signed 14 agreements during that period,which have helped ease tensions across the strait and benefited thepeople on both sides, he added.
