Taipei, Sept. 7 (CNA) Taiwanese epic film "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale" will represent Taiwan to compete for the best foreign language film title at the 84th Academy Awards, a government agency said Wednesday.

The film, which depicts a Taiwanese aboriginal revolt against Japanese rule in the 1930s, has received an unanimous recommendation from members of a review panel, according to the Government Information Office (GIO).

The review panel selected the film to represent Taiwan in the Oscars.

The epic film, directed by Wei Te-sheng, beat eight domestic movies, including the popular fictional comedy "Night Market Hero" and the high-grossing romantic comedy "You are the Apple of My Eye," to compete for the Oscars nomination on behalf of Taiwan.

The NT$700 million (US$24 million) film has drawn widespread media and public attention in Taiwan even before it opens in theaters.

It has sold over 140,000 pre-sale tickets worth a record NT$42 million, and is scheduled to be screened in 67 theaters around the country on Friday.

The film has also been nominated for the Golden Lion award at this year's Venice Film Festival. The winner of the award will be announced Saturday.

The other Taiwanese films in the competition were "Goodbye May," "Leaving Gracefully," "Blowfish," "When Love Comes," "Juliets" and "Make Up."

The GIO said that Taiwanese films selected to run for the Oscars can apply for subsidies of as much as NT$1.5 million (US$51,568) to help it cover transportation, subtitles and dialogue revision expenses for the competition.
