Taipei, Oct. 29 (CNA) Taiwan and the Philippines held a forum in Manila Tuesday on cooperation in small and medium-sized enterprise development to facilitate innovation in the region.

The Small and Medium Enterprise Administration (SMEA) under Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), and the Philippines' Department of Trade and Industry, jointly organized the forum that was part of a series of four meetings titled the "APEC Local Innovation Ecosystem Forum: Enhancing Local Industry Clustering and Social Innovation with International Reach."

The SMEA said that through panel discussions, experience sharing and mentoring activities, the forum is expected to "accelerate the knowledge accumulation and capacity building of SMEs, as well as the development of local innovation ecosystems."

According to the SMEA, the forum was the last of the four, with the previous ones held in the Russian city of Tomsk and Taipei in June and the other in Bangkok in August.

The agency said panel discussions shared ideas and opinions in terms of inclusive innovation, social innovation, women's empowerment, and local markets' connections to the global network.

The agency added that the start-ups which presented their practices at the session not only received advice from mentors on their business models, but also shared their information and networking experiences with representatives from different sectors in APEC economies.

Addressing the forum, Su Wen-ling (蘇文玲), deputy director- general of the SMEA, said that in a bid to achieve the goal of "grand opportunities, equal benefits," it is vital to look for solutions to assuage the impact of growing disparity between urban and rural development.

"Co-implementing the APEC Local Innovation Initiative with the Philippines is regarded as concrete action to respond to the task," Su said.

She expressed gratitude to the Philippines and other partners under the APEC local innovation ecosystem initiatives for pushing for cooperation, adding that she looks forward to more collaboration.

The MOEA said that through the promotion of the Local Ecosystem Innovation initiatives, many APEC resources are expected to help the economies in the region establish a platform for cross-border information sharing and opinion exchanges.
