Agricultural losses from Typhoon Nesat exceed NT$60 million

Taipei, July 30 (CNA) Agricultural losses in Taiwan from the damage wrought by Typhoon Nesat have been initially estimated at NT$60.19 million (US$2.03 million), the Council of Agriculture (COA) said Sunday, citing estimates valid as of 11 a.m. that day.

Yilan County suffered the heaviest losses at NT$41.17 million, or 68 percent of the total national losses, the COA said.

Pingtung County reported agricultural losses of NT$18.46 million (31 percent), followed by Taoyuan at NT$570,000 (1 percent), according to the COA.

Crop damage accounted for most of the losses, with 622 hectares of farmland and NT$46.77 million-worth of crops damaged, the COA said.

Guava farmers took the biggest hit, suffering crop losses of NT$10.92 million and damage to 100 hectares of farmland. Other crops damaged include pomelos, green onions, bamboo shoots and bananas.

The livestock sector faced NT$12.98 million in losses, largely due to losses of chickens and pigs, the COA said.

Other losses were estimated at NT$440,000 and include damage to farm equipment, according to the COA.

Nesat, which swept across Taiwan Saturday, left 103 people injured across Taiwan, with 541,008 households reporting power outages.
