Taipei, May 31 (CNA) Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-shiang will leave Friday for Russia to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministerial-level meetings that will focus on regional economic integration and trade and investment liberalization.

Shih will take part in the trade ministers meetings in Kazan June 4-5, which will discuss issues such as reducing trade barriers and increasing food supplies to meet the needs of businesses and consumers, the ministry said in a statement Thursday.

Shih is expected to back the efforts of the United States and Japan to expand the Information Technology Agreement (ITA), which removes tariffs from a number of high-tech products.

The trade ministers will seek to formulate strategies for resisting protectionism amid global uncertainty and expanding trade, paying particular attention to environmental issues, in line with APEC's green growth and sustainable development objectives, the ministry said.

Shih and his delegation, comprising officials from the Council of Agriculture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Department of Health, will also hold discussions with APEC members on bilateral trade issues.
