Taipei, Oct. 4 (CNA) Taiwan brought home a total of 51 medals -- 10 golds, 18 silvers and 23 bronzes -- from the 2014 Asian Games that ended Saturday in Incheon, South Korea.

Of the 10 gold medals, seven were in Olympic sports -- two each in weightlifting and golf, and one each in cycling, tennis and taekwondo.

Two of the gold medals were won in the karate competition, and one in bowling.

It was Taiwan's best performance ever, based on the number of gold medals won in Olympic sports.

In the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, Taiwan finished with a medal count of 67 -- 13 gold, 16 silver and 38 bronze. Only six of those gold medals, however, were in Olympic sports.

Taiwan's best performance in terms of gold medal count was in the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, when it took 19, four of which were in Olympic sports.

With the conclusion of the Asian Games, Taiwan's next challenge is the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The country won only two medals -- a silver and a bronze -- at the 2012 Olympics in London.
