Ma tells Le Figaro: Taiwan will not be another Hong Kong

Paris, Sept. 26 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou said Taiwan will not be "another Hong Kong" since the Republic of China is a sovereign country with its own political systems and democratic values, while Hong Kong was transferred to Chinese authorities in 1997, according to a report published Friday by major French daily Le Figaro.

The president also said that Taiwan and China have engaged in exchanges based on the principle of "one China, different interpretations."

The phrase, based on the 1992 Consensus, refers to how Taipei and Beijing tacitly agree to disagree on which government is the legitimate ruler of China.

Ma continued that the student-led Sunflower Movement in March and April against the legislative review of the trade-in-services agreement with China has caused small and short-term impacts, adding that Taiwan cannot turn a blind eye to China's rising influence and has to adjust its China policy to secure peace and prosperity.

Ma also reiterated his standing hopes of meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at November's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leadership summit in Beijing, saying that he still considers the summit the most suitable occasion for a meeting.

Some 80 percent of people in Taiwan support maintaining the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, Ma asserted, adding that trade liberalization is crucial to Taiwan and Taiwan should open its doors wider to China.
