Taiwan President’s US stopovers may become ‘visits’

01/18 20:35

Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen has just concluded a visit to Central America as well as stopovers in the U.S. Beijing was worried that Tsai would use the trip to promote Taiwan's international profile and build relations with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's team, and that this could eventually lead to Trump changing the U.S. acknowledgement of the one-China policy under which Beijing defines Taiwan as a part of China. But a Republican-led Congress may soon vote on a recently proposed Act that may normalize visits by Taiwan's presidents to the U.S. and make them more common.
