President Lai returns to Taiwan after Eswatini state visit

President Lai Ching-te returned to Taiwan Tuesday after a state visit to Eswatini, Taiwan’s only diplomatic ally in Africa.\n\nLai said the trip, from May 2-5, showed Taiwan’s determination to engage with the world despite external pressure.\n\nLai had originally planned to visit Eswatini from April 22-26 to mark the 40th anniversary of King Mswati III’s accession to the throne and his 58th birthday, but the trip was suspended after the Seychelles, Mauritius and Madagascar revoked overflight permits for the president’s chartered plane.\n\nThe Presidential Office attributed the decision to China's "economic coercion" of the three African states.
