World Cup opener brings football fever to Taipei

The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off in Mexico on Friday (Taipei time), but the excitement was also felt more than 13,000 kilometers away in Taipei. Around 100 football fans gathered at a sports bar in Taipei at 3 a.m. to watch a live broadcast of co-host Mexico taking on South Africa in the quadrennial tournament’s opening match. For many in the crowd, the game was more than just football. Mexican, South African, and Taiwanese fans told CNA the World Cup offered a chance to celebrate their cultures and share their passion for the world’s most popular sport.
