Taipei, Feb. 8 (CNA) China's Red Cross Society has pledged a donation of 1 million yuan (US$159,107) to its counterpart in Taiwan for disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of the deadly earthquake that hit Hualien County in eastern Taiwan late Tuesday.

According to a report from China's state-run Xinhua news agency, China's Red Cross Society got in touch with Taiwan's Red Cross Society immediately after news of the earthquake broke, to understand more about the severity of the damage and how it can help.

China's Red Cross Society expressed condolences over the earthquake and support for the victims, according to Xinhua, and is ready to dispatch its own search and rescue team to Hualien if needed.

Its donation of 1 million yuan is the latest in an outpouring of donations from both the local and international communities.

On Wednesday, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) pledged a personal donation of NT$1 million (US$34,800) for reconstruction and rehabilitation work, while Premier Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said he will donate one month's salary (NT$333,360) to the relief efforts.

Lawmakers from multiple parties, including the Democratic Progressive Party, the Kuomintang, the People First Party and the New Power Party, have also said they will make donations.

Meanwhile, businesses, including Wistron Corp. and Acer Taiwan, will donate NT$10 million and NT$5 million, respectively.

The Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) has reported receiving generous donations from various expatriate Taiwanese around the world, including US$100,000 from one Taiwanese expat in Southeast Asia and NT$6 million from expats in China.

The rescue efforts are ongoing in Hualien as rescuers make the most of the 72-hour "golden hour" period immediately following the earthquake, when victims' chances of survival are the greatest.

The latest tally confirms at least 10 people dead, 267 injured and 58 missing.
