Taipei, May 16 (CNA) Taiwan's second nuclear power plant in New Taipei's Wanli District has suspended operations of its No. 2 reactor after the reactor shut down unexpectedly on Monday.

The incident occurred at around 11 a.m. when the reactor had just resumed operations after undergoing a month-long annual maintenance.

It is uncertain when the reactor can be restarted because inspections and an investigation into the cause of the problem will take some time, according to Li Chi-ssu (李綺思), deputy chief of the Atomic Energy Council's Department of Nuclear Regulation.

The No. 1 reactor at the two-reactor power plant also shut down unexpectedly on Dec. 26, 2015 due to a problem with its control system. It was restarted the following day after testing.
