Magong Airport gets new instrument landing system

Taipei, June 25 (CNA) A new instrument landing system was inaugurated at Magong Airport in outlying Penghu County Thursday, which is expected to improve safety after a fatal crash just outside the airport under stormy conditions last July.

Hung Chien-nan, director of Magong Airport, said the airport originally had only one set of instrument landing system for its Runway 02.

After last year's TransAsia plane crash with the loss of 48 lives, the Civil Aeronautics Administration decided to install an additional instrument landing system and airport approach lights for Runway 20.

With the new instrument landing system, the visibility requirement for the runway has dropped from 1,600 meters to 1,200 meters.

TransAsia Flight GE 222, which took off from Kaohsiung last July 23, crashed in Penghu after aborting a landing in unstable weather and trying to make a go-around. Of the 58 people on board, 48 were killed.
