Taipei, June 18 (CNA) The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) warned the public Thursday to avoid outdoor activities until after 2 p.m. due to excessive levels of ultraviolet rays because of clear skies and high temperatures.

People in northern Taiwan's Hsinchu and Miaoli counties, southern Taiwan's Yunlin, Chiayi and Pingtung counties, as well as Tainan, Kaohsiung, and eastern Taiwan's Hualien and Taitung counties are at the greatest risk, the EPA said.

The ultraviolet index in those areas has reached 12, the agency said, explaining that an 11-up level is considered dangerous.

One can get sunburn by standing under the sun for just 15 minutes in this situation, it said.
