New Delhi, April 15 (CNA) Taiwan's top envoy to India, Tien Chung-kwang (田中光), was awarded the Global Achievers Award by the New Delhi-based Citizens' Integration Peace Society on Sunday in recognition of his contribution to Taiwan-India relations.

In his acceptance speech, Tien, who has served as head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India since 2013, said bilateral relations have seen significant progress in recent years in the economic, education and tourism spheres.

For instance, Taiwan has set up Chinese-language teaching centers in many higher education institutions in India, and more than 5,000 Indians are studying the language at these centers, according to Tien.

The government is also offering scholarships for Indian students to study in Taiwan, he added.

Taiwan and Indian have much more room for cooperation in the information and communications technology sector as well, he said.

The ceremony was joined by K.V. Rajan, former vice foreign minister of India, who praised Taiwan for its achievements in the fields of education and computer technology, as well as the values of human rights and democracy it shares with India.

The award was given to Tien during a conference organized by the society on "international unity and industrial growth."
