Taipei, June 3 (CNA) Former Premier Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) has been appointed as Taiwan's representative to Japan, the Presidential Office announced Friday.

Hsieh, 70, is a founding member of the Democratic Progressive Party and served as premier from 2005-2006.

If everything goes well, Hsieh said, he will travel to Japan on June 9 or 10 to take up his new post.

"I'm not a career diplomat, so that means I'm a political appointee," Hsieh said in a recent interview in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
