Taipei, April 24 (CNA) Taiwan will hold its largest-ever Minnan culture festival April 28-May 4 to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Fujian Province in southeastern China, event organizers said Tuesday.
The General Association of Chinese Culture said the week-long festival will feature the adventurous culture of the region, long a major hub of immigration.
"We will provide a broad but deep view of the culture from the perspectives of architecture, cinema, literature and cuisine," said Liu Chao-shiuan, president of the organization.
The festival will be held in Taoyuan County, Tainan and the outlying island of Kinmen -- which were the main gateways for Minnan immigrants to Taiwan since the 17th century.
Scholars and immigrant community leaders from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Japan will also be invited to the festival to share their views on the Minnan cultural heritage, Liu said.
Kinmen Magistrate Li Wo-shih noted that the event will also include a city-god festival that will reach its climax in early May.
More than 1,200 people from 37 city god temples in Taiwan and China, Li said, will hold a massive parade to pray for good fortune.
"Visitors will get a chance to tour the county and listen to folk stories," Li added, explaining that the spectacular pilgrimage will offer an in-depth experience of Minnan culture.
